I am a visual arts educator with more than two decades of experience in secondary technical and vocational education, teaching across Fine Arts, Photography, Graphic Design, Digital Media, and Visual Communication.

I believe arts education extends beyond learning how to produce images. It develops the ability to observe, question, investigate, make decisions, solve problems, and communicate ideas.

My approach combines visual foundations, hands-on projects, technology, experimentation, problem-solving, and reflection. Through this combination, students develop both practical skills and the confidence to make purposeful choices.

My Teaching Philosophy

Students learn deeply when they have opportunities to investigate ideas, work through problems, reflect on outcomes, and communicate what they have learned.

I see the art classroom as both a studio and a learning environment—a place where students can experiment, take creative risks, make mistakes, receive feedback, and develop their own perspectives.

I believe effective arts education should balance creative expression with practical knowledge. Students need opportunities to understand not only how tools and techniques work, but why particular choices are appropriate for a given idea, audience, or purpose.

Whether creating a photograph, developing a visual identity, or producing a digital composition, students learn to consider intention, context, audience, and the relationship between visual decisions and meaning.

Because every learner brings different experiences, interests, strengths, and ways of seeing, I provide guidance and differentiated support while allowing meaningful choice.

My goal is to create a classroom where students feel supported enough to experiment and challenged enough to grow.

My experience in Career & Technical Education has strengthened my belief that creative education can prepare learners for both further study and professional opportunities.

Through authentic projects, students develop portfolios, technical abilities, creative problem-solving strategies, communication skills, and professional habits.

They learn to plan, produce, present, receive feedback, revise, and explain their work—experiences that can support future study and careers across photography, design, digital media, visual communication, and related fields.

My experience in photography and design helps me introduce students to processes that extend beyond the classroom.

From Idea to Portfolio

I use project-based learning to connect concepts with sustained, hands-on experiences.

Rather than treating individual skills as isolated exercises, projects allow students to work through a complete cycle—from an initial question or idea to a developed outcome and presentation.

A project may begin with a question, observation, visual challenge, or personal interest.

Students investigate possibilities, establish a direction, test approaches, produce work, receive feedback, refine their outcomes, and present the results.

Through this process, they learn to:

Assessment That Supports Growth

Assessment is part of the learning process rather than something reserved for the end of a project.

I use different forms of evidence depending on the nature of the work:

Feedback is provided throughout development so that students can use it while meaningful changes are still possible.

The purpose of assessment is not simply to measure achievement. It should help students understand where they are, what they have learned, and how they can move forward.

Why I Teach

I want students to learn how to see, create, communicate, and imagine possibilities.

Visual arts education can help young people become curious observers, thoughtful makers, confident communicators, and capable problem-solvers.

After more than two decades in visual arts and technical education, I continue to believe that making is a powerful way of learning.

When students are given opportunities to experiment, make decisions, receive feedback, revise, and share their work, they begin to understand not only what they can make, but what they are capable of becoming.

My goal is to create a classroom where students feel supported enough to experiment, challenged enough to grow, and empowered to develop their own creative voices.
